Bithumb Exchange Under Regulatory Scrutiny Following Bitcoin Distribution Error
South Korean financial authorities have launched an emergency investigation into cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb after a system malfunction erroneously distributed 2,000 bitcoins during a promotional event. The incident occurred during a 'Random Box' campaign where users received Bitcoin instead of the intended 2,000 won rewards, causing abnormal price fluctuations on the platform.
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has initiated an on-site inspection to evaluate regulatory compliance and assess the feasibility of asset recovery. Governor Lee Chan-jin convened an emergency meeting, while the Financial Services Commission (FSC) has begun a parallel review. Bithumb CEO Lee Jae-won is expected to participate in upcoming discussions with regulators.
